Legend has it that the head of Saint John the Baptist was not in fact kept at Damascus, but was among the relics of the Minister Church at Halifax, dedicated to his memory.
However, it seems this story may have roots in another curious tale, that of a murdered woman whose head was set upon a Yew tree in Halifax many centuries ago, and was worshipped as holy by locals who believed that the hair of the Virgin was issuing from the Yew’s bark (A dialect word for hair being ‘fax’).
